The programme

Navigator’ is a 4 day leadership and management focused experiential learning programme that provides participants with an opportunity to identify and develop the skills needed to improve both personal and business performance. The fact that success in work depends on finely tuned leadership and management is reinforced throughout the programme.

Development adventure

Participants return refreshed, motivated and ready to deliver enhanced performance through increased understanding and profound personal awareness.

We embraces the latest thinking, ideas and methods to energise, utilise and extend entrepreneurial skills, but more importantly capitalise on the way things used to be when getting the job done meant using the simple techniques that are still important but underutilised in this modern world.

Tall Ships are complex, and require everybody onboard to participate to sail them around the clock. It would not surprise you to know that the skills needed to do this are the same as those needed to ensure an organisation works and performs effectively. Working aloft sets new standards in leadership, team working and communication, making this programme varied, challenging, exciting and demanding.

The old saying, “You can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink” doesn't count here; if just one horse doesn't drink all the horses go thirsty.

Everybody is a new starter on these ships, a truly status free environment for everybody. On a Tall Ship just like a business there are no passengers, only stakeholders.

People spend many years developing leadership skills, but working in harmony is different. Therefore, once in a while it is good to get out of the modern environment and enjoy a ship, the sea, the anchorage and the company of their crewmates; this is an important part of the experience and its amazing what people find to talk about; but not for too long: - a Tall Ship is meant to be sailed.

Being part of a crew brings responsibility, adventure and an unprecedented opportunity for development, as this is best done at sea not too much time is spent in port.

Development environment

The ship becomes a self contained business community; the running of the ship is in fact a parallel to running a business but more concentrated and demanding. When you are onboard a Tall Ship, all your senses are alive, it is thrilling, your ability to learn is unbelievable, you just know this memory will last forever.

The sailing challenge

Formal training and practical study in seamanship/navigation takes place, and on completion you take control of the vessel. Everyone is assigned to one of four watches, and all watch member take part in all duties required to run the ship.

The workplace challenge

To develop the leadership skills needed to ensure high levels of performance are achieved and maintained shipmates keep a development log and produce an action plan for implementation on their return to work. To support this process development coaches hold briefing/de-briefing sessions and conduct ongoing performance reviews.

The whole venture is centred on the question of “how will you apply what you have learned on your return to work?”
